Starting therapy can feel both exciting and a little daunting. You might wonder: What will it be like? Will I have to talk about everything at once? Will it help?
At The Felt Space, the first session is simply an opportunity to get to know each other and explore what brings you here. There’s no pressure to have answers or to explain your whole life story. The aim is to create a safe space where you can feel heard and understood.
Here’s what typically happens in the first session:
- Introduction and Practical Details
We’ll go over practical matters like session length, frequency, fees, and confidentiality. This ensures you feel safe and know what to expect. - Understanding Your Story
You’ll have space to share what brought you to therapy, in your own way and at your own pace. We’ll notice patterns, feelings, and experiences that are important to you. - Exploring Your Goals
Together, we’ll consider what you hope to achieve—whether it’s gaining clarity, easing emotional distress, understanding patterns, or simply finding a space to process your experiences. - Experiencing the Approach
During the session, you’ll get a sense of how my general, client-led approach works in practice. Therapy here is flexible and unstructured, guided by your needs and pace. Together, we’ll see whether this style feels supportive and helpful for you, because every client responds differently and not every approach suits everyone. - Next Steps
At the end of the session, we’ll discuss how therapy might proceed, whether weekly sessions or another plan, and any questions you have.
Remember:
The first session is not about “fixing” anything. It’s about connection, exploration, and establishing a safe space. Many people leave feeling relieved simply to have been heard and understood.
Starting therapy is a step toward gentle self-discovery and support. You don’t need to know the path yet—just taking the first step into The Felt Space is enough.
